UMF VS MGO

The key difference between the UMF and MGO grading system is that UMF measures all four Manuka Honey chemical indicators (Leptosperin, Methylglyoxal, DHA and HMF) and the MGO system measures only the Methylglyoxal levels.

Methylglyoxal is the main contributor to the non-peroxide activity (NPA), and thus the antibacterial benefits of Manuka Honey. The higher the level of methylglyoxal, the more effective the Manuka Honey is.

UMF grades start at 5+ and go until 25+. MGO grades start at 30+ and go as high as 800+.
